Vegan Chocolate Donuts

CONTRIBUTORS

Craving a delicious, guilt-free treat? These vegan chocolate donuts are the answer! This vegan chocolate donut recipe is guaranteed to satisfy your sweet tooth. Whether you’re vegan, dairy-free, or just looking for a healthier dessert option, these chocolate donuts are perfect for anyone. They’re great for breakfast, a midday snack, or even as a guilt-free dessert to share with friends.  Once you taste them, you won't believe they’re vegan.

Tips for Perfect Vegan Chocolate Donuts

  • Use a piping bag (or a Ziploc with the corner cut off) to fill your donut pan cleanly.
  • Allow the donuts to cool fully before applying the chocolate glaze to prevent it from melting.
  • Add espresso or brewed coffee for a deeper chocolate flavor.
  • Want a richer taste? Stir in vegan chocolate chips before baking.

Why Bake Instead of Fry?

  • It's healthier. Without hot oil, there's reduced fat and fewer calories.
  • You only need a donut pan and an oven; no fryer necessary.

  • Quicker cleanup, faster prep, and super reliable results every time.

  • Baking results in a light, airy texture, much like a muffin or cupcake, but shaped as a donut!

Whether you have a fully plant-based diet or are just exploring vegan baking, these chocolate donuts are proof that you don’t need eggs or dairy to make truly delicious donuts. This recipe guarantees you'll make rich, fluffy, chocolatey, and surprisingly simple donuts. We'd love to hear your favorite donut or topping ideas!

Vegan Chocolate Donuts

Yield: 6 donuts
Author:
prep time: 15 minutes cook time: 12 minutes total time: 27 minutes

ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour blend, if needed)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (or coconut sugar for a more natural option)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 cup almond milk (or any plant-based milk)
  • 1/4 cup melted coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup applesauce
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup brewed coffee (optional, enhances the chocolate flavor)
  • 1/2 tsp apple cider vinegar (helps activate baking soda)
  • For the chocolate glaze:
  • 1/2 cup dairy-free chocolate chips or chopped dark chocolate
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup or agave syrup (optional, for sweetness)
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract

instructions:

How to make Vegan Chocolate Donuts

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease or spray a donut pan with non-stick spray.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Mix Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, combine the almond milk, oil, applesauce, vanilla extract, coffee (if using), and apple cider vinegar. Stir until well combined.
  4. Combine Wet and Dry: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. The batter should be thick but pourable. If it's too thick, add a little more plant-based milk.
  5. Fill the Donut Pan: Spoon the batter into the donut pan, filling each cavity about 3/4 full. You can use a piping bag or zip-top bag to make this step easier and mess-free.
  6. Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean and the donuts spring back when gently touched.
  7. Cool: Allow the donuts to cool in the pan for 5-10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Prepare the Chocolate Glaze:
  9. Melt the Chocolate: In a microwave-safe bowl or over a double boiler, melt the dairy-free chocolate chips with the coconut oil, stirring until smooth.
  10. Add Sweetener and Vanilla: Once the chocolate is melted, stir in the maple syrup or agave syrup (if using) and vanilla extract until smooth and glossy.
  11. Dip the Donuts: Once the donuts are completely cool, dip the tops into the chocolate glaze, allowing any excess to drip off.
  12. Optional Toppings: For an extra touch, sprinkle chopped nuts, coconut flakes, or mini chocolate chips on top of the glaze while it’s still soft.
