Indulging in a sweet treat can sometimes mean veering off the path of healthy eating. For those who crave the decadent combination of chocolate, nuts, and caramel but seek a healthier alternative, we've crafted a perfect solution: Healthy Snicker-Like Dates.

Ideal for health-conscious individuals or anyone looking to add more natural, nutrient-rich snacks into their diet, our Snicker-Like Dates promise indulgence without compromise. Join us in exploring how to make these delicious, nutritious snacks that everyone can enjoy.

Health Benefits of Dates

The benefits associated with dates include:[1]

  • Nutritional and Functional Characteristics: Dates are highlighted for their significant nutritional and functional characteristics, making them an exceptional choice for developing snack bars.

  • Wide Range of Nutrients: They contain a broad spectrum of macro- and micronutrients with strong bioactive properties, such as dietary fiber, unsaturated fatty acids (e.g., oleic and linoleic acids), vitamins (e.g., riboflavin, niacin, tocopherols), and minerals (e.g., potassium, calcium).

  • Essential Amino Acids: Despite being low in protein, dates are found to have significant amounts of essential amino acids like lysine and histidine.

  • Bioactive Components: Dates are rich in bioactive phytochemicals such as phenolic acids, polyphenols, and carotenoids, contributing to their antioxidant potential.

  • Health Benefits: The consumption of dates has been associated with various health-beneficial effects, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, antihypertensive, anti-hypercholesterolemia, and antimicrobial effects.

  • Enhanced Functional Properties: Incorporating additional bioactive ingredients with dates in snack bars can further enhance their functional properties, increasing the contents of phenolics or flavonoids, and thus, their antioxidant potential.

  • Economic Value: Dates are considered highly valuable from both environmental and economic perspectives, with their cultivation showing significant growth trends.

Selection/Storage of the best dates

  • Examine them closely - do they appear fresh? A fresh date will be plump and have a glossy appearance, indicating juiciness and freshness. It's normal for them to have some wrinkles, but they shouldn't be excessively shriveled. Conversely, ensure they aren't leaking any liquid.[2]

  • Touch and feel - Gently press or squeeze them. Are they soft or firm? Dates that are too hard may be dry, while overly soft ones might end up being too mushy in your mouth.[2]

  • Watch for signs of aging - Keep an eye out for white patches on their skin, a symptom of sugar crystallization, suggesting they are aging. While crystallized dates can still be tasty and safe to eat, avoid purchasing them in this state as their shelf life will be reduced.[2]

  • Proper storage - To maintain their freshness, dates should be stored properly. Using airtight containers can prevent them from crystallizing. Refrigerating them is an option, and for long-term storage, freezing is viable. Despite their high sugar content preventing them from freezing solid, this method can preserve them for up to a year.

  • Pay attention to how they are stored in the store or market - If they are attractively displayed in an open pile, inquire about how long they have been out. Be wary of older dates possibly being concealed beneath fresher ones by some retailers. It's best to select each date individually or opt for a securely sealed package.

Snickers dates

Snickers dates

Yield: 8
prep time: 15 M cook time: 2 hr total time: 2 H 15 M

  • For the base:
  • 8 medjool dates
  • 1/2 cup Almond butter
  • 1/2 cup Peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup Walnuts
  • 1/4 cup almonds
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate
  • Sea salt for sprinkling
  • Extras/Optional:
  • Crushed walnuts
  • shredded Coconut
  • White chocolate

  1. Carefully slice each date along one side to remove the pit. Ensure not to cut all the way through; you want to create a pocket for the fillings.
  2. For half the dates (4), place a walnut inside each, followed by a teaspoon of almond butter. Spread the almond butter inside the pocket as evenly as possible
  3. For the other half, place an almond in each, followed by a teaspoon of peanut butter. Similarly, spread the peanut butter evenly inside the date.
  4. Prepare the Chocolate Coating:
  5. Break the dark chocolate into small pieces and add it to a heat-proof bowl along with the coconut oil. Melt the mixture using a double boiler method or in the microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring in between, until smooth and fully melted.
  6. Using a fork, dip each date into the melted chocolate, ensuring it's completely coated. Tap off the excess chocolate.
  7. Place the chocolate-coated dates on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. If desired, sprinkle a few sea salt flakes on top of each for an extra flavor dimension.
  8. Toppings:
  9. Add sea salt, crushed walnuts or coconut flakes or you can drizzle some melted white chocolate or peanut butter over the chocolate-coated dates. Use a small spoon or a piping bag for precision
  10. Setting the Chocolate:
  11. Refrigerate the dates for about 1 hour, or until the chocolate has fully set.
