Reasons Why You Should Add Bell Peppers To Your Meals

CONTRIBUTORS

Bell peppers are not only delicious but they also offer numerous health benefits. They are versatile, and can be easily incorporated to any dish to boost its flavor. Here are three reasons why you should include bell peppers to your daily meals.

  1. Packed with antioxidants

Bell peppers are loaded with antioxidants, such as carotenoids (beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin) and flavonoids. These compounds help prevent oxidative cell damageThe antioxidants found in bell peppers help neutralize harmful free radicals, reducing the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes and certain types of cancer.

  2. Boost your immune system

Bell peppers, particularly the red ones, are excellent sources of vitamin C. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), half a cup of raw, red pepper provides 95 milligrams (mg) of vitamin C, which accounts for 106% of the recommended Daily Value (%DV) for adults and children aged 4 and over. This vitamin plays a crucial role in supporting the immune system, promoting wound healing, and protecting against infections.
Bell peppers are also a great source of vitamin A. Vitamin A is involved in immune function, cellular communication, growth and development, and male and female reproduction. The form of vitamin A that orange and red peppers contain is called beta carotene, which the body converts into the active form of vitamin A.

  3. Good for digestive health

Bell peppers are a good source of fiber, which aids digestion and promotes a healthy gut. Despite only having 30 calories in every 1-cup serving, raw bell peppers contain 2.5 grams of dietary fiber. Fiber helps prevent constipation, supports regular bowel movements, and contributes to overall digestive well-being.
